Google Tech Talks
August 11, 2008
ABSTRACT
After the disaster of the original Xbox, Microsoft put a lot of effort in designing what is probably the most sophisticated consumer hardware security system to date. We present its design, its implementation, its weaknesses, how it was hacked, and how to do it better next time.
Speaker: Michael Steil
Michael Steil has been involved with various embedded systems hacking projects, like the Xbox, the Xbox 360 and the GameCube. In 2006, he has spoken at Google about the flaws in the security system of the original Xbox.
Speaker: Felix Domke
Felix Domke is the principal author of the Xbox 360 hack and the Linux port. He has also significantly contributed to hacking the dbox2, the GameCube and the Wii, and porting Linux to the respective platforms.

I recently installed a wireless home security systems (ADT), and now I am noticing a clicking emanating from my home theater system. I am wondering if it is caused by the new security, and if so, how can I fix it?
A bit of detail on the clicking: it is similar to, but not the same as, the phone interference caused by certain (GSM) phones.
This is one of the many reasons I stay away from Wireless Security Systems. The thing is, the industry is well aware of the problems wireless security systems cause. Unfortuntately the ease of installation and quick monitoring revenues tends to win out over providing a decent system.
I’m not going to profess to being an expert in home theatre, I don’t know where the interference is entering the system. If you have RF audio or video transmission I could see that as the culprit. As for changing the frequency, I don’t know if this can be done but if so, that might just fix your problem.
Another solution would be to block RF out of the media room, although costly, metal walls might do the trick.
Honestly, I would suggest you contact the company who sold you the system. If you are positive the alarm system is causing the problem, they can test it out by powering the ENTIRE system down. This includes the wireless door contacts, motion sensor and anything else that would be sending that pulse. If the problem goes away, tell them to make the system go away. Opt for a hardwired security system. Yes there is more work involved in the installation, but the quality is better.
ADT, Brinks, Slomin, etc…. who is the best and why? Please help decide which security system to purchase. Thanks!
I mean seriously….. which security company should I use? No dogs… no walls…. ELECTRONIC SYSTEM.
I looked around a bit and read that ADT is probably the best bet.
Sorry about all the "comedians" who feel the need to one up the last person with a humorous answer.
Like they say, there is no such thing as a stupid question, but the people here prove that there’s such a thing as a stupid answer.
I applaud the village of idiots.
Watch this video for a demonstration of “How To Build a Laser Security System”. To complete the task, you will need:
A laser pointer
Get started with the first step: Build the circuit. Center the microchip on the circuit board. Pop in the voltage regulator. Connect the battery clip leads to the regulator. Run 2 more leads out from the regulator. Pop in the resistor and the photo cell. Link the chip to the photo cell. Pop in the relay. Link the chip to it as well. Link the other side of the relay to “power.”

We have a security system that isn’t fully functional due to issues with the poor installation but we would still like to be able to arm it at night. Does anyone know how to simply turn on the chimes? No need to fully arm it so police or fire are notified (not like they get notified anyway since the system isn’t functioning yet we pay), just want the noise if a door or window is opened. System is a Honeywell.
Oh yeah, NEVER buy from Firstline Security out of Colorado. They take your monthly payments, stick you with a system that doesn’t work, leave you with a defunct phone line and tell you to upgrade if you want it fixed or pay over $900 to have a non-functioning system removed! We’re still fighting with them to fix our system. Nice gig if you can get it!
We are locked into an agreement that they won’t release us from even though the monitor company they go thru has admitted they can not see our system. So stopping payment would only send our account to collections. Not a smart move.
Egad, sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately I run into alot of people who have issues with poorly installed security systems and a lack of service – Just went to one yesterday and will be tearing it out next week. This is Particularly true when it comes to wireless, which is why I only install hardwire.
First of all, what is the problem with the security system, maybe it is something that I can walk you through. I hate to see people paying for something they aren’t using.
Failing that, I would do the following:
- document EVERYTHING, every conversation you have with these "people", every letter, every invoice and of course every problem
- tell them you are going to contact the media
- tell them you want out of your contract as they are in breach. They offered you a product (presumably you wanted one that worked) you accepted their offer by paying. They installed the system but it does not work.
- If you have a rock solid case you may want to just stop paying. I know in Canada, if someone puts you into collections and they do end up following it up, you would get a day in court. Of course this could also effect your credit rating.
With the chime mode, just contact me with the model number and I will send you a users manual. Personally I do not like the Honeywell / Ademco product line but I can get you a manual. Typically with this brand enter your code followed by chime to toggle it on and off. This will only chime zones that are programmed to chime. Typically not motion detectors.
