I have a stereo system (CD player, tape decks, etc) attatched to my speakers, with red+white input in the back of it.

Can I purchase some kind of hub with multiple red+white inputs in – that I can plug my ipod / laptop / TV into simultaneously, and a switch to flip between them – which has a single output that I can plug straight into my stereo?

Thanks!

Actually yes, You can buy an A/V switcher that has 3 or 4 inputs, You would obviosusly not connect the yellow (video) cable to the device. Just the audio ( Red and Whites) to each different position on the device. 1 set will be outputs that you will connect to the input of your stereo system. Then you would use this switch box to switch between the sources, depending on what you want to use. The only alternative is to buy an audio "mixer" but that can be a lot more expensive Remember that for the ipod and the laptop will require adaptors from phono plugs to RCA style plugs as the switcher will not accept phono (single male type plugs)

I just moved into a new house and there are speakers installed in the ceiling of every room along with a volume control knob in every room. There isn’t any type of receiver/intercom system installed in the home that I can find. The only odd thing I have located is a uhf/vhf connection in the wall (the old type where you wrap the wire around the screw) which is located just under the volume control in the den area of the house. I think it would be neat to be able to play my stereo through these speakers. I already have my tv and dvd set up to run through my stereo system. Any idea on how to hook up to these speakers? I asked the guy who lived here before me and he had no idea. I did try just running speaker wire from the stereo to the UHF/VHF connection, but it obviously didn’t work. I know that uhf and vhf are associated with TV’s but figured I would give it a try anyway. If you have any ideas, please shoot them my way. Thanks!!

The volume control is placed between the amp and the speakers, so if you take a volume control out of the wall, you’ll see what the wire is that feeds it. If you can find where that wire goes, you can hook to that (if it still works).

Sounds like it’s so old that you might have problems — the volume controls are worn or burned up, the speakers are open, shorted, or the cones are damaged, etc.

If you really want to use speakers in the ceiling, you might just go ahead and put new ones in with wiring that you know about instead of the mystery stuff…

I’m building an ice chest stereo and wondering about how long it would run on a deep cycle battery? It will have an aftermarket cd player powering 4 speakers. I was thinking about adding an amplifier and 12 inch subwoofer to the system but do not know about how long the battery would run it with that set up. I know there are many variables such as the music volume and the size of battery, but just an average guess would be fine. Thanks!

i have one in my camper if i just run the cd player and 4 speakers it will play 24 hours a day for days at any volume.i all so have a sub with 400 watt amp if i run that at a high volume its dead in about 4 or 5 hours. and thats with a BIG battery

I wanted to connect my iPod through the back using the AUX cable and it worked but the sound quality was horrible. There has to be a way to make the sound quality sound perfect. What can I do?

Well it won’t sound perfect. An iPod just doesn’t have fidelity that high. But you can get an adapter cord at Radio Shack, or someplace that sells electronic accessories, and connect it to an input. Don’t connect it to the phono input though. The woofers will try to jump out of the enclosures.
