How I do I reduce the pressure on a combi boiler system?

I repressurised the system yesterday and forgot to turn the valves back again. As a result the pressure is now between 2 and 3 when cold and almost at the highest level (4) when I turn the heating on. What can I do to reduce the pressure?

Open a bleed valve on a rad and draw off excess water that way. Do it when the boiler is cold.

There are so many differnt types of boiler, that it’s hard to know which one to go for… Also, is it cost-effective to have a hot water storage cylinder?

I can probably go along with Worcester Bosch, water storage is always more expensive than instantaneous hot water from a combi, but, the storage cylinders are very efficient now, and if you use a regular boiler, you can get a 300 litre cylinder which will run 2 baths simultaneously providing you have sufficient cold water pressure, (you cannot oversize your boiler, it is against regulations, and, condensing boilers optimise when working hard), combi boilers are dependent on water requirements also, any combi will run a standard heating system, but, if you want to be efficient, don’t go for the WB i junior, (no hot water temperature control), if you are out all day, and don’t use the bath a lot, use a WB 30si, if you use the bath and generally use a lot of hot water, use a WB cdi boiler, they go from 30kw (12.7 litres per min) to 42kw (18 litres per minute), in any event, only put a boiler in that is compatible with cold water delivery rate. can someone tell me where I may get spare gaskets for a Servowarm Supreme Plus Boiler system?

The gasket on the manifold to the left of the boiler has start leaking. I have tightened the four bolts and stopped it, but I suspect it will soon need replacing. Fitting a new system will be a problem as I live in a 4th floor flat, and access to provide balance flues will be difficult and expensive. Also redecoration in the living room would be needed if the existing system is removed. So keeping this one going is my preferred option. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Use a properly qualified and regulated gas service engineer or you could end up blowing yourself and other up is the best advice anyone could give you.

How much would a new boiler system cost? UK?

Our current boiler system is 28 years old, and likely to die at any minute.

What’s the cheapest you can get a new boiler for? It has to be a combi boiler by law, I think. It doesn’t need to be particularly fancy, just as long as it will heat the radiators.

OK, Combi boiler, yes by law.
28 year old system……will need re-plumbing.
Get 3 or 4 quotes. British gas will be the most expensive, outrageously so.
(a) The hot water cylinder will have to go…..gives you a cupboard back!
(b) The pipes feeding that will have to go…..and the electrics of course.
(c) The system you have now will be be operating at gravity pressure only, a combi boiler will require a presurised system, this has a habit of finding leaks at some of the joints in the pipework.
(d) Each rad. will need taking off and flushing out with a hose, the whole system will need flushing to get rid of the black gunk.
(e) Each radiator will require a thermostatic valve, again by regulatory law.
(f) The work will need a certificate from the authorities, both electric and gas work.
(g) Cost. Assuming you have a "7 room house" a decent Baxi boiler (Say the 105) will cost you about £800. The plumbing and flushing and certification etc. is going to be about £1,700 (Will take two people about 4 full days) and a sparky to plug it all in (And certify it) will be about another £100. (This assumes the plumber puts the wires in but leaves connection to the sparky…this is normal practice but some plumbers won’t go near a wire).
£2,600 maximum, will be more (About £80 per rad. if you decide to change the rads.)
You may even want a towel rail in the bathroom, and they are a rip-off at about £100 for the cheap ones.

Plumbing: Can I feed warm water from Solar system to Boiler?

In summer my hot water is gravity fed from a roof top solar heating system. In winter I use a diesel boiler fed from the mains. I would like to feed the boiler from the warm water from the solar system instead of the mains, by using a pump, so that I use less fuel. Is it feasible?

Yes it is possible but has to be done by experts

Is there a way to do self maintenance on a home boiler/radiator system?

I will turn my boiler/radiator system back on tonight for the first time since last winter. I am use to having a furnace and ductwork, and I heard that you need to have maintenance done on your boiler before you start it each winter. Is this true and is it something I can do myself? Are there books that I can purchase? I am a pretty handy guy and can fix almost anything, but have never done anything to a boiler/radiator system. Please help. Thanks.

first clean off the baseboard elements (they will let off accumulated dust and the like) vacuum
make sure the area around the boiler is clean and, that it is not lacking ventilation in the room
it is a good idea to get the inside of the boiler cleaned and inspected by someone who has a license (ask the town fire department, there probably not suppose to but they sure wont give you the # of the guy that they had to clean up after)
