How do I hook up existing speaker system to my stereo/home theater?

Posted on May 26th, 2010 by admin

I just moved into a new house and there are speakers installed in the ceiling of every room along with a volume control knob in every room. There isn’t any type of receiver/intercom system installed in the home that I can find. The only odd thing I have located is a uhf/vhf connection in the wall (the old type where you wrap the wire around the screw) which is located just under the volume control in the den area of the house. I think it would be neat to be able to play my stereo through these speakers. I already have my tv and dvd set up to run through my stereo system. Any idea on how to hook up to these speakers? I asked the guy who lived here before me and he had no idea. I did try just running speaker wire from the stereo to the UHF/VHF connection, but it obviously didn’t work. I know that uhf and vhf are associated with TV’s but figured I would give it a try anyway. If you have any ideas, please shoot them my way. Thanks!!

The volume control is placed between the amp and the speakers, so if you take a volume control out of the wall, you’ll see what the wire is that feeds it. If you can find where that wire goes, you can hook to that (if it still works).

Sounds like it’s so old that you might have problems — the volume controls are worn or burned up, the speakers are open, shorted, or the cones are damaged, etc.

If you really want to use speakers in the ceiling, you might just go ahead and put new ones in with wiring that you know about instead of the mystery stuff…
