Plumbing: Can I feed warm water from Solar system to Boiler?

Posted on May 19th, 2010 by admin

In summer my hot water is gravity fed from a roof top solar heating system. In winter I use a diesel boiler fed from the mains. I would like to feed the boiler from the warm water from the solar system instead of the mains, by using a pump, so that I use less fuel. Is it feasible?

Yes it is possible but has to be done by experts

Yes the warmer the incoming water the less energy it takes to bring it up to temp.

It is feasible. However you need to have it done by a plumber who is familiar with the technology and can avoid mis-connections and pumping in the water when it is colder than the normal feed from the main.

You might also want to think about how much energy is consumed by the pump and offset that against the savings in heating the water.
